Moulding
Flexibility of moulding production facilities to meet customer requirements
Chesterfield
At Chesterfield all moulds are manufactured in metal moulding boxes. We have an extensive stock of moulding boxes ranging from 1m square to boxes of 6 metres in length.
All moulds manufactured utilise a alkaline phenolic chemically bonded sand system. This moulding medium produces a hard rigid mould that gives the resulting casting a superior surface finish. It also benefits from improved dimensional stability over other moulding mediums.
Sheffield
As with the Chesterfield facility the moulding medium used is alkaline phenolic chemically bonded sand. Sheffield also has the ability to produce moulds in metal boxes but for moulds up to 1 mt sq the boxless moulding “compacts” method is used. If it is possible to use boxless moulding, the advantages are that this method of production allows the foundry to tailor make the compact to suit the pattern shape. This very often results in lower moulding costs for our clients.
Shell cores can be utilised where the customer demands a high level of precision around internal passageways. Zircon and Chromite sands are used for super heated areas of the mould / cores or to promote a change in directional solidification.
The surfaces of all moulds are coated in Zircon based refractory mould paints to further enhance the surface finish of the casting.
